John Pickerel and Melanie Bajakian, owners of the famous Buckhorn Steak and Roadhouse, started the company in 1980.
Soon the couple was taking their custom-built portable wood-fired smoke oven and grill to farmers’ markets in Napa and Davis, selling their soon-to-be-famous char-roasted tri-tip sandwiches. Before long, people wanted them to bring the unique smoker oven and grill to cook on site for their weddings, corporate parties, and even formal dinners set in orchards or olive groves. Sometimes the clients, like service clubs, didn’t have space to accommodate on site cooking, but still wanted the food that Buckhorn had become known for. Quickly the small company grew to include numerous delivery vans, a 10,000 square foot facility with a commercial kitchen, and a fleet of wood-fired smoker ovens and grills.
